Description:
Original fiction, essays, memoirs, poetry, and drama on prisons and captivity.

This community is for the posting and recommendation of prison literature: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Literature about captivity outside of a prison environment is also welcome.

All types of original fiction and nonfiction are welcome: gen (no romantic or sexual pairing), het, lesbian/femmeslash/yuri, and gay/slash/yaoi. All genres are welcome: contemporary, historical, fantasy, etc.

NOTICE FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

Stories here will range from the literary equivalents of rated G to rated NC-17. Adult supervision is recommended.

RULES

1) Please use a header and tags (see below).

2) Please place any text for mature readers behind a link or an lj-cut.

3) No fan fiction or RPF, please. You're welcome to post your prison fan fiction or RPF at our companion community, powerfic.

4) Delightedly squeeing about fictional abuse is fine, if that's your sort of thing. The characters won't mind. But please don't utter any shouts of joy when discussing real-life abuse. Some folks visiting here will have undergone real-life abuse, if not necessarily in a prison, then somewhere else. We'd like to keep this a friendly environment for them.

HEADERS

When posting your own writings, please use the header below, or something similar:

Title:
Author:
Category: [Fiction, nonfiction, m/f platonic feelings, etc. If you put this sort of information in the tags, then you don't need to repeat it here, unless you want to.]
Rating: [PG, R, for general readers, for mature readers, etc.]
Summary: [What the writing is about.]
Warnings: [If your writing addresses sensitive topics, such as abuse, death, or BDSM, either warn for it in some way or say that you're not providing warnings, so "read at your own risk."]

Feel free to adapt that header to your needs. The important thing is to provide the information mentioned in the header above: title, author, category, rating, summary, and (if needed) warnings.

LAST THOUGHTS

Art credit: Frontispiece by Frank Wright from Twenty-Five Years in Seventeen Prisons: The Life Story of an Ex-convict with His Impressions of Our Prison System, by "No. 7" (1903).

"Imprisonment means being imprisoned by someone or by some force, whether external or internal; hence prison literature concerns the workings of power and resistance to power, whether represented by Zeus, by the state, or by compulsions and needs within."

[W. B. Carnochan: "The Literature of Confinement" in The Oxford History of the Prison.]
